Art Andratx: Helga Schmidhuber: Wild Orchids & Other Mothers
CCA Andratx

Description
CCA Andratx presents Wild Orchids & Other Mothers, a new exhibition by German artist Helga Schmidhuber opening on Friday, 2 October from 17:00 to 20:00. Created in connection with the art centre’s 25th anniversary, the exhibition brings painting, objects and installation together in a major presentation of Art Andratx, running from 3 October 2026 until 27 February 2027.
Born in Wiesbaden in 1972, Schmidhuber studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Dieter Krieg and Albert Oehlen, graduating as Oehlen’s master student. Painting sits at the centre of her multidisciplinary practice, although sculpture, collage, found objects and installation regularly become part of her work. She has previously completed residencies at CCA Andratx, giving the artist a longstanding connection to Mallorca and the surrounding landscape.
Nature is central to Wild Orchids & Other Mothers. Schmidhuber has long been fascinated by flora and fauna and works intuitively, building images in layers and responding to unexpected forms that emerge during the process. As a synesthete, she also describes her practice as moving across different senses, materials and associations.
The “Wild Orchids” element has a direct connection to Andratx. Years ago, after a forest fire near CCA, Schmidhuber encountered brightly coloured orchids and new vegetation growing through the burned landscape. That experience became an image of resilience and regeneration that continues to influence her work.
“Mothers”, meanwhile, is conceived as an evolving installation dedicated to the artist’s female heroes. Paintings, objects and found materials come together in a work that can continue changing throughout her time at CCA, adding a more personal dimension to the exhibition.
Among Art Events Mallorca this autumn, Wild Orchids & Other Mothers also marks another chapter in Schmidhuber’s relationship with CCA Andratx. The centre is located in Sa Coma, just outside Andratx, surrounded by more than 200,000 square metres of land at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana.
