Es Baluard Museu and Casal Solleric present A Media Lumbre, a major collective exhibition curated by Blanca de la Torre that connects contemporary art with traditional craftsmanship, materials and shared memory. This Art Event Palma brings together works using ceramics, clay, wool, textiles, embroidery and natural fibres, alongside sound and oral traditions, and remains on view until 18 October.
The exhibition looks at forms of making that have historically been classified as craft or “minor arts” and places them firmly within contemporary artistic practice. Handmade processes and materials become a way of exploring territory, inherited knowledge and the memories that pass between generations.
Curator Blanca de la Torre also introduces sound, silence and the human voice into the project. One of the references behind A Media Lumbre is the tradition of the filandón: evening gatherings around the fire where people combined manual work with conversation and storytelling. Here, that relationship between making and remembering becomes part of the exhibition’s wider examination of collective cultural heritage.
The Mallorca edition is particularly extensive. The project is presented across Es Baluard Museu, Casal Solleric and Sa Refinadora in Marratxí, with a strong representation of artists from or connected to the Balearic Islands. Artists associated with the wider project include Ana Laura Aláez, Pilar Albarracín, Adriana Meunié, Isabel Servera, Marta Font and Jessica Stockholder, while the Mallorca presentation adds further locally connected artists.
For anyone following Art Events Mallorca, A Media Lumbre offers an interesting meeting point between contemporary art and techniques that stretch back generations. Rather than treating ceramics, weaving or embroidery simply as traditional objects, the exhibition considers the knowledge, gestures and stories embedded within the process of making them.
The Palma openings took place on Thursday, 23 July, beginning at Casal Solleric at 19:30 and continuing at Es Baluard Museu at 20:30. The Art Event Palma runs from 24 July until 18 October 2026, with the exhibition divided between the two Palma institutions.
