Capella de la Misericòrdia presents De la terra al Cel, an exhibition by Mallorcan ceramic artist Joan Pere Català Roig, curated by Luis Juan de Sentmenat García-Ruiz as part of Biennal B. Running until 6 March 2027, this Art Event Palma explores ceramics through earth, fire, time and craftsmanship, placing the traditional medium firmly within contemporary art.
Català Roig has developed a highly personal approach to ceramics, rooted in both craftsmanship and a more spiritual understanding of the creative process. His work focuses on the transformation of clay and glaze through firing, with clean forms that allow the material itself to take centre stage.
His connection to ceramics also extends well beyond gallery work. Previous projects include reproducing 4,000 tiles for the bell tower of the Cartuja de Valldemossa, creating the mosaic for the fountain at Palma’s Plaça de la Reina and restoring Lluís Castaldo’s mural in Parc de la Quarantena.
De la terra al Cel is part of Biennal B, the contemporary ceramics biennial connected to Es Baluard Museu and the Consell de Mallorca. The exhibition also forms part of Mallorca’s cultural programme surrounding the Diada de Mallorca and the 30th anniversary of Nit de l’Art, placing it within a wider series of Art Events Mallorca this season.
At the centre of this Art Event Palma is the idea that ceramics can be more than a functional craft. Català Roig’s pieces highlight the rhythm and ritual involved in making an object by hand, exploring how something as basic as earth can be transformed into an artistic object through knowledge, patience and fire.
The exhibition opened on 10 September at 20:30 and remains on view from 11 September 2026 until 6 March 2027. This extended run makes De la terra al Cel one of the longer-running contemporary art exhibitions in Palma across the autumn and winter season.
