Museu de Mallorca presents Digital Splash, the final project by pioneering Italian video artist Fabrizio Plessi, as part of BIENNAL B. Running until 25 October, this Art Event Palma combines a large-scale video installation with drawings from the Black Splash series, exploring water, technology, space and the shifting boundary between the physical and digital worlds.
Fabrizio Plessi was one of the major European pioneers of video art and multimedia installation. Born in Reggio Emilia in 1940, his career began in the late 1960s and developed around the meeting point between technology and elemental forces such as water and fire. His work was shown internationally at the Venice Biennale, documenta 8 in Kassel, Centre Pompidou and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Mallorca also played an important role in Plessi’s life and work. The artist had been closely connected to the island since 1989 and maintained a home and studio in Santanyí, making Mallorca one of his key places for creation and inspiration for more than three decades. Digital Splash was the last project he worked on before his death in August 2026.
At the centre of this Art Event Palma is a large video installation created specifically for the Museu de Mallorca. Moving digital imagery transforms the exhibition space, while eleven accompanying drawings offer a more intimate view of Plessi’s creative process. Technology, movement and artificial intelligence are used to explore how our perception of natural elements changes when they are translated into digital form.
Digital Splash is curated by David Barro and Jackie Herbst and produced through a collaboration between Es Baluard Museu and the Consell de Mallorca. It forms part of BIENNAL B as well as the cultural programmes surrounding the Diada de Mallorca and Palma’s Nit de l’Art, placing the exhibition within the wider calendar of Art Events Mallorca.
The exhibition opened on 15 September at 20:30 and can be seen from 16 September until 25 October 2026. For contemporary art in Palma this autumn, Digital Splash offers a significant final chapter in the career of an artist who spent decades examining what happens when nature, material and technology meet.
