Museu de Pollença presents A Natureza, an immersive installation by Brazilian artist Albano Afonso that transforms the historic church of the Convent de Sant Domingo into a sensory landscape of light, reflections and natural forms. Running until 25 October, this Art Event Pollença explores the relationship between people and nature through perception, space and changing light.
Born in São Paulo, Albano Afonso is known for installations that work with photography, light, mirrors and projection. His practice frequently plays with the boundary between what is physically present and what is perceived, creating environments in which images fragment, disappear and reappear depending on the viewer’s position.
For A Natureza, the artist takes the experience of entering a forest as his starting point. Light moves through the installation while reflections and shadows continually alter the architecture of the former Dominican church, making this Art Event Pollença an exhibition that changes as visitors move through the space.
The exhibition is also inspired by the Japanese concept of shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing”, which centres on experiencing a forest through the senses. Afonso translates this idea into an indoor environment, using light, reflections and natural imagery to evoke the feeling of being surrounded by nature rather than reproducing a literal landscape.
Curated by Jackie Herbst, A Natureza forms part of BIENNAL B, the contemporary art programme developed by Es Baluard Museu together with cultural institutions across Mallorca. For those following Art Events Mallorca, the exhibition takes the programme beyond Palma and into one of Pollença’s most important historic cultural spaces.
The setting is central to this Art Event Pollença. Museu de Pollença occupies the former Convent de Sant Domingo, built between 1588 and 1616, while Afonso’s installation is presented specifically inside its historic church, creating a dialogue between centuries-old architecture and contemporary installation art.
A Natureza opened on Saturday, 4 July at 20:00 and remains on view until 25 October 2026. The extended run makes this Art Event Pollença one of the town’s key contemporary exhibitions across the summer and early autumn.
