Es Baluard Museu presents Ghada Amer: Sculpture Since 1991, bringing together more than three decades of sculptural work by the Cairo-born, New York-based artist. This major Art Palma exhibition spans ceramics, bronzes, screens and sculptural experiments in which beauty, ambiguity and contradiction repeatedly overlap.
Born in Cairo in 1963 and raised in Nice, Amer studied at Villa Arson before later moving to New York. She has become internationally recognised for a practice that crosses painting, embroidery and sculpture, often questioning established ideas around gender, desire, cultural identity and the traditional divisions between artistic disciplines. Her work has been presented at institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Centre Pompidou, Brooklyn Museum and Smithsonian National Museum of African Art.
Sculpture Since 1991 focuses specifically on Amer’s sculptural practice. Her ceramic works have a strongly painterly character, with colour and unpredictable forms playing an important role, while her bronzes introduce a more solid material into works that still resist a single interpretation. The exhibition also includes fountains created in collaboration with Mallorcan ceramic workshop Pere Coll, adding a local connection to the presentation in Palma.
Ambivalence is central to Amer’s work. Images can appear clear at first and become less certain on closer inspection, while materials traditionally connected with domestic crafts or decorative art are placed within contemporary artistic and social contexts. It gives this Art Palma exhibition a layered quality without turning the work into a direct or literal statement.
Curated by Clara Garau and David Barro, the exhibition is presented in Space A at Es Baluard Museu. For those following Art Events Mallorca, it is one of the museum’s major exhibitions spanning autumn 2026 and the beginning of 2027.
Ghada Amer: Sculpture Since 1991 opened on 17 September at 19:00 and runs from 18 September 2026 until 31 January 2027. Es Baluard is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00.
