Can Balaguer presents Gaudí. Intimate Impressions, a photography exhibition by Spanish artist Aitor Ortiz offering a quiet, contemporary perspective on the architecture of Antoni Gaudí. Featuring around 70 works, this Art Event Palma moves away from the familiar postcard images of Gaudí’s buildings to focus instead on light, texture, geometry and architectural detail.
Aitor Ortiz is a Bilbao-born photographer whose work is closely connected to architecture and the transformation of physical space into abstract photographic compositions. Rather than treating buildings simply as subjects, his photographs often isolate surfaces, structures and shadows, creating images in which it can be difficult to distinguish between architecture and abstraction.
In Gaudí. Intimate Impressions, that approach is applied to one of Spain’s most recognisable architects. Ortiz looks beyond the monumental scale of Gaudí’s work, concentrating on smaller details and visual fragments. Curves, surfaces, materials and changes in light reveal another side of buildings that are usually photographed from a much wider perspective.
The exhibition brings together approximately 70 photographs and creates an interesting dialogue between Gaudí’s architecture and Ortiz’s own visual language. For those following Art Events Mallorca, the show offers a photography-focused addition to Palma’s summer and autumn cultural programme, remaining open for almost five months.
The setting adds another architectural layer to this Art Event Palma. Centro Cultural Can Balaguer occupies one of Palma’s historic manor houses, with its restored interiors providing a contrasting backdrop for Ortiz’s contemporary photographic interpretation of Gaudí. The building itself is also home to the permanent exhibition La casa possible, which explores the evolution of Palma’s historic domestic interiors.
Gaudí. Intimate Impressions opens on Thursday, 25 June at 20:00 and remains on view until 15 November 2026. The long exhibition period makes this Art Event Palma part of the city’s cultural calendar throughout the summer and well into autumn.
